S9A & S9BB - Sao Tome and Principe Nov/Dec 2004
Pekka, OH2TA; Pertti, OH2PM and Martti, OH2BH were active from the Democratic Republic of Sao Tome and Principe between Nov 20th and Dec 3rd, 2004, including the CQWW DX CW Contest. They had two stations covering all bands, CW and SSB. The callsign S9BB was used outside the contest and S9A by Pertti in the contest. QSL manager is Pekka, OH2TA. The expedition was supported by Charles Lewis, S9SS; Mike Mertel, K7IR (SteppIR); Vertex Standard (Yaesu) and the Marlin Beach Hotel, Sao Tome.

A historic all-S9 ham dinner party was organized by the S9BB group and attended by those you hear regularly, such as S9SS, S9YL, S9TX, S9AG and others.

Sao Tome was fun, and with limited manpower they were able to push the QSO total to nearly 25,000. Conditions turned out surprisingly unstable, varying from day to day. The tropical noise came lower at times, allowing the team to make a number of 160m/80m contacts. In particular, 80m CW signals were easier to copy with sharp filters regardless of the noise. Congratulations to those who made it thru.

The S9 experience has been an extremely pleasant one, with the cooperation of Marlin Beach Hotel and many local people. They are all friendly and seem to allow visiting tourists to enjoy the country, with no sign of aggressive commercialism or inhospitable attitude. Sao Tome is clean and free of crime, making a visit by wandering DXers a positive experience. See the Bom Bom Island Resort website at www.bom-bom.com.
